The clocks haven't gone back yet, but the phone has already started ringing with the same question we hear every autumn: what's the best way to anchor a mobile field shelter before the weather turns? So consider this our yellow anchor weather warning. If your shelter is sitting on the ground on skids with nothing holding it down, now is the time to fit some field shelter anchors.

Why field shelters need anchoring
A mobile field shelter is designed to be moved, which is exactly what makes it vulnerable. A timber shelter on skids has a large, flat side that catches the wind, and an open front that funnels a gust straight in. Once the ground softens and the autumn gales arrive, an unanchored shelter can shift or lift, putting your horses, your fencing and the shelter itself at risk. The Met Office weather warnings give you a few days' notice at best. Anchors give you peace of mind all winter.

The Spirafix field shelter anchor kit
Our standard solution for a mobile field shelter is simple. Four SF50-10-630C solid head anchors and four SA238 five-hole through slot brackets, one for each corner of the shelter. The bracket bolts to the corner post, and the anchor is driven down through the slot in the bracket. When the collar of the anchor reaches the bracket, the job is done. There's no digging, no concrete and no waiting for anything to set.

A shelter can be secured in minutes, which is handy when a warning has just landed for the weekend. Full details are on our ground anchors for field shelters page.

Fully reusable when the shelter moves
Here is the part that matters for a mobile shelter. Many owners move their shelter between fields with the seasons, or shift it to fresh ground when one area has been poached. Our field shelter anchors come out as easily as they went in. A 28MM spanner or equiv counter rotates the anchor back out of the ground, leaving virtually no trace, and a manual hammer cap protects the anchor head so the same set can be reinstalled again and again. It's a solution that has proven very successful year after year.

Designed and made in Britain
Every Spirafix anchor is designed and manufactured at our factory in Cwmcarn, South Wales. Each blow of the hammer drives the anchor down and rotates it on its own helix, so it grips the ground rather than relying on a block of concrete. The 50mm ground anchors used in the field shelter kit sit in the middle of a range that runs from 30mm right up to 75mm, so if you have a larger shelter or a more exposed site, we can specify accordingly.

One thing we always say: check for buried services before you drive any anchor into the ground.
