Client: Rob Rudling at Morgan Sindall for London Heathrow
To develop a temporary runway and taxiway lighting solution on behalf of Morgan Sindall, for use in operational airfield environments.
Ensure solution developed could be installed safely and securely, and could be certified as safe/compliant in line with CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) requirements.
Design a bespoke bracket to dovetail between Blue Edge Lights and Spirafix secure ground anchor.
Requirement for a solution with a high degree of accuracy which could be delivered in limited time frames and which left no trace in the ground.
Challenges
Installing solution within a live operational airfield environment.
Installation of over 120 anchors within limited night time possessions (22:30 - 05:00) across a short period of time (1 week).
Final solution required CAA compliance for use within UK airports.
Installation and deconstruction of solution (once works were completed) needed to be rapid to minimise disruption to the runway, as well as minimising any remedial works required.
Solution
Create bespoke plates with corresponding jig.
Install anchors using jig.
Fix baseplates to Spirafix Ground Anchors (attach blue lights accordingly).
Once construction was completed, remove lighting, base plates and anchors.
Store for next job.
Client Feedback
Quote - 'The Spirafix product is a vast improvement to the concrete blocks we had to install and remove at Heathrow Airport previously - for fixing blue edge lighting.
They are easy to install, easy to remove and with no repairs or disposal, are a good solution going forward'.
